Sanding is an essential part of any finished woodworking project. In its simplest form, you can use a piece of sandpaper and some elbow grease, but power sanders are much faster and more efficient. This video has some tips for choosing the right sander for your project.
Depending on what type of project you’re working on, you may want a more aggressive sander, like a belt sander, which removes a lot of materials quickly. Or you may be better off with an orbital sander, which has built-in dust collection. My orbital sander tends to get the most general-purpose use around my shop, although I usually pull out the sanding sanding attachments for my oscillating multi-tool and rotary tool for detail work.
As with all tools, the right sander depends on your project and your comfort level with different types of power tools.
